Chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board

Smt. Mridula Sinha is the chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board, the national body concerned with all the welfare programmes implemented by the Government of India under the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Smt. Sinha is a past vice president of the BJP, and a former national president of the BJPs women’s front, Mahila Morcha, which played a major role in mobilizing the women of India. She is also a past chairperson of the National Commission for Women.

Ms. Sinha’s work for women is eminently pragmatic: she has initiated pre-marital counseling programmes, crèches, old-age homes and vocational-training courses in traditional arts for women, provided help for widows of men killed in terrorist activities, called for more part-time jobs for women, and is currently engaged in seeking to aid women and children in very difficult circumstances, such as the children of women in prostitution, widows, the physically handicapped and women in institutions.
